Spotlight on… Tim Harper, Chief Credit Officer.

Meet Assetz Capital Chief Credit Officer – Tim Harper.

How long have you been at Assetz and how did you get into business lending?

I joined Assetz in August 2017, to provide part-time support to the credit team. I quickly found the role both engaging and rewarding, I was enjoying my time so much that by December I had transitioned to a full-time position, leading the team. My prior experience spans 37 years at various iterations of RBS, where I held several senior regional and national roles. After a brief period as Commercial Director in the quarrying industry, I returned to the finance sector, which is where my expertise lies, and have been thriving at Assetz ever since as Head of Credit.

What does a normal day look like in your role?

I never know, and therein lies the attraction. One moment I might be assessing whether to fund a development project in Devon, and the next, I’m strategising on how to help a business recover in Humberside. The variety is immense, but I’m particularly passionate about development funding, an area where Assetz has been highly active during my time here. I enjoy witnessing what’s being built and how successfully it sells.

What’s the best thing about working at Assetz Capital and working in lending?

While it may sound cliché, the people truly make the job enjoyable – both within and outside of the organisation, I’m lucky that the people within Assetz Capital are fantastic, and I particularly appreciate the robust discussions we have when deciding whether to proceed with a deal. The same level of collaboration is needed when working with our funders to secure their support. Even after 45 years in the industry, there’s still a sense of accomplishment and thrill when a deal is successfully completed and drawn.

What’s your favourite activity outside of work?

I’m lucky enough to have a close-knit family that occupies much of my time. For 45 years, I was a season ticket holder at West Brom, though I now only attend the odd game here and there due to the pandemic. These days, I spend more time at my other passion which is our holiday chalet in Abersoch, North Wales. My wife often “encourages” me and our old cocker spaniel, Alfie, to embark on long walks and enjoy the scenic outdoors.
